Schadenfreude Pie: Michele Bachmann

Schadenfreude: n.
delight at the misfortune of others

Update Oct 28th 2008 9:05am PST: All videos back.

Update Oct 27th 2008 10:30am PST: Wow, someone nuked half of the YouTube videos. Colin Powell and the Daily Show clips are still there, but the others are all gone (they were working this morning as I in the Pacific Northwest think of morning). I suppose someone in the Bachmann campaign reads teh Internets.

Additional note: I preserved the most salient quotes from the videos that were vaporized, however. If I can find related Daily Show/Colbert Report/etc clips I’ll put them up.

funny pictures

It’s not so much because she’s a Republican. Let me put it this way: much as I despise Sarah Palin, at least she isn’t stupid enough to start actively calling for the advent of McCarthyism. (Although I’m sure Palin will at some point. It seems inevitable as a Neocon position.)

Take one vapid “let’s bring back McCarthyism” comment made on National TV:

(Around the 4:30 mark)

Matthews: How many congresspeople are in the anti-American crowd you describe?

Rep. Michele Bachmann: What I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out: Are they pro-America or anti-America? I think people would love to see an expose like that.

Add in a last-ditch denial that she said anything of the sort:

First minute of video, October 19th:

I’m not saying his views are anti-American, that was a misreading of what I said, and so I don’t believe that that’s my position.

Second minute of video, October 17th:

Matthews: Do you believe that Barack Obama has anti-American views?

Michelle Bachmann: Absolutely. I’m very concerned he may have anti-American views.

Update: DailyKos video with better intercutting below. Video above has been removed from YouTube.

Fold with a 180-turn and go back to claiming anti-American:

Bachmann Doubles Down: ‘Barack Obama’s Views Are Against America’

And so, he was using the word “Anti-American” and I told Chris, what I question are Barack Obama’s views. Because Barack Obama’s views are against America.

… And they can’t take it because the point is what are Barack Obama’s policies? Are they for America or will they be against traditional American ideals and values?

(Transcripts available at link above.)

Blend with said comments pushing conservatives to endorse Obama:

Arne Carlson
Carlson, ex-GOP Minn. governor, backs Obama

Carlson, who served from 1991 to 1998, also cited recent comments by GOP Congresswoman Michele Bachmann questioning whether politicians have “pro-America or anti-America views.”

Colin Powell

(Around to 0:38 mark)

Doesn’t make any difference who you are or what you are, if you’re an American, you’re an American. This business of, for example, a congressman from Minnesota who’s going around saying, “Let’s examine all Congressmen to see who pro-America or not pro-America”—we have got to stop this kind of nonsense.

Thoroughly mix with blaming that darn Chris Matthews:

Tuesday: Bachmann: ‘I made a misstatement’

Appealing to business leaders and party faithful for support, Rep. Michele Bachmann retreated Tuesday from her televised claim that Barack Obama “may have anti-American views,” but also asserted that “a trap was laid” that prompted her remark.

Combine with the GOP writing off her seat as doomed:

GOP ‘goner’ list warns of House rout

…the GOP is all but writing off the seats of Reps. Marilyn Musgrave (R-Colo.), Joseph Knollenberg (R-Mich.), Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), Phil English (R-Pa.), and the open New Mexico House seat of retiring Rep. Steve Pearce (R-N.M.), who is running for the Senate.

Sprinkle in an apology ad that doesn’t apologize:

I may not always get my words right, but I know that my heart is right, because my heart is for you.

And her hold on her seat is slip, slip, slipping away:

House Race Roundup: New Bachmann Polling!

New poll shows support slips for Bachmann

In the new MPR poll, only 8 percent of voters said they were more likely to support Bachmann as a result of her remark that Obama “may have anti-American views” and her call for the news media to investigate the views of members of Congress.

Now, this may not actually be enough to jolt her from her seat. But she’s not making things any easier for the GOP.

Politicians may not be honest. Some may not be on your side, whatever that is.

But please at least be competent in handling your public affairs.
