Twitter’s website is currently bugging you to change to their new, fancier layout. I don’t particularly like it for a number of reasons (namely that it shoves content all the way to the left, making it less readable for me), but at least Who To Follow is no longer at the very top of the right column.

However, it can still be annoying to you. Here’s how to block this little piece of HTML via Adblock Plus add-on in Firefox.

Blocking Who To Follow

1. Install Adblock Plus if you haven’t already.
2. Log into twitter.
3. There should be a red ABP button in the toolbar over on the right. Click the tiny arrow next to it, which will pull down a menu, and choose “Preferences…”.
4. In the pop-up window that appears, click the “Add filter…” button at the bottom, which will produce a new entry in the list of filters and focus on it so you can type stuff in.
5. In that new entry in the list of filters, type in the following:

   twitter.com#*(wtf-inner)

6. Hit tab to save the entry, and click the “Ok” button at the bottom of the window.
7. The Who To Follow component should now be gone.

A note: I prefer this methodology over the separate “Who To Follow” blocking add-ons, since I already use ABP and don’t want to add even more add-ons.

Blocking Trends

If you don’t like trending topics, that’s too bad; the new Twitter layout won’t let you close Trending Topics. However, you can block them via the same method as blocking Who To Follow, with the filter

instead.
